Croque-Monsieur

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 slices of white bread

  • 8 slices of cooked ham

  • 200g of Swiss or Emmental cheese, grated or sliced

  • 2 tablespoons of softened butter

  • 2 tablespoons of mustard

  • 1/2 cup of milk

  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream

  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

  • Nutmeg (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped parsley (optional)

  • Gourmet topping (optional): 1 fried egg

PREPARATION

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Spread the softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. On the other side of 4 slices, spread the mustard.

  2. Assemble the Croque-Monsieur: Place a slice of ham on the 4 slices of bread with mustard. Then, distribute the grated or sliced cheese over the ham.

  3. Assemble the Sandwiches: Cover each sandwich with another slice of bread, buttered side up, to form 4 Croque-Monsieur sandwiches.

  4. Prepare the Béchamel Sauce: In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk and heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
