Croque-Monsieur
INGREDIENTS
8 slices of white bread
8 slices of cooked ham
200g of Swiss or Emmental cheese, grated or sliced
2 tablespoons of softened butter
2 tablespoons of mustard
1/2 cup of milk
1/2 cup of heavy cream
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Nutmeg (optional)
1 tablespoon of fresh chopped parsley (optional)
Gourmet topping (optional): 1 fried egg
PREPARATION
Prepare the Ingredients: Spread the softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. On the other side of 4 slices, spread the mustard.
Assemble the Croque-Monsieur: Place a slice of ham on the 4 slices of bread with mustard. Then, distribute the grated or sliced cheese over the ham.
Assemble the Sandwiches: Cover each sandwich with another slice of bread, buttered side up, to form 4 Croque-Monsieur sandwiches.
Prepare the Béchamel Sauce: In a small saucepan, gently heat the milk and heavy cream until hot but not boiling. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg (if using).
Coat the Croque-Monsieur: Pour the warm béchamel sauce over the Croque-Monsieur, ensuring they are well coated.
Bake the Croque-Monsieur: Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F). Place the Croque-Monsieur on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until they are golden and crispy.
